Media Creation

Generative Drum-Break Machine (2022)

I made this generative drum break (i.e. jungle or drum and bass) machine in my Introduction to music technology class.

I used Logic Pro X to make the break. Then it uses ChucK to randomize the breaks.

I found this project unique because it showed me how technology (programming) can be used to make art. I am interested in computational and generative media (i.e. how do we use the technology at our disposal to make art?) I also love jungle music, so it was also an opportunity to combine multiple interests.

Here is a sample of the Generative Beat Project.

Beat Randomizer (2022)

Similar to the one above, I made this beat randomizer in my introduction to music technology class. I also used ChucK for the randomization and Logic Pro X to make the drum sounds. It essentially is a drum pattern where the parameters (pitch, volume, pan) are randomized for each hit which creates an addictive effect.

Again, this is another instance of generative media, and also, my first experience with it at Carleton which I find interesting.

Here is a sample of the Beat Randomizer.

Electronic Music Composition (2023)

I made this in Electronic composition in my Electronic Compsition class. I used the software Logic Pro X to make it. It contains both synthesized sounds and recorded sounds (the drum pattern is actually recorded non-drum sounds).

I have been interested in making music, and it allowed me to create something that I have always wanted to make while also learned a lot about how music is made (i.e. how do synthesizers work etc.)

Here is my song in full!

Recursive Eye Movie (2021)

I made this film as my final for my intro CAMS course.

I am very interested in sound design, and I wanted to focus on it for my first “feature film.” I made all of my sounds in Audacity by uploading files to generate random noise or recording sounds and generating them that way.

I worked on this film during the height of the pandemic — a time as students we were all couped up into our rooms with nothing to do. Living in Watson with the thin walls, you could random noises that I always wondered where they came from which I thought would be a great basis for a film.

This project not only gave me some experience with filmmaking and creating media, but it also gave me an opportunity to express myself with media during the pandemic.
